The Society was formed to preserve, safeguard and promote the characteristics of Mersea Island for the benefit of all, to arrange open discussion whenever it appears necessary to obtain a consensus of public opinion and to provide opportunities to gain factual knowledge from lectures, visits and discussion of this GREAT ISLAND.
The Society publishes it’s annual journal, the “Mistral”, providing a view of various aspects of life in Mersea both past and present and addressing issues of concern. Items of local interest for the “Mistral” are contributed by members and friends.
The Society organises lectures on a variety of topics by guest speakers, occasional coach tours to places of interest, and other social events throughout the year.
The Mersea Island Society Footpath Group organises a walk once a year to cover every footpath on the island to ensure they are in good order and report any defects to the authorities.
The Society welcomes new members and encourages members to come forward for various roles on the Committee to enable it to undertake a wider range of activities.
